FOUNDING KaZaA Zennstromwasworking for Tele2, a Swedish telecomcompanywhen hemet Friis. Zennstrom had graduated in Engineering and Business from Sweden’s Uppsala University. When Tele2 sent him to Denmark to build its ISP business there, he advertised in a fewnewspapers for people to join his team. Friis, who was working for a rival company, responded and was hired. Their collaboration continued till late 1992, when both quit Tele2 and started brainstorming for new ideas... SKYPE In June 2002, Zennstromand Friis were contemplating on their next venture and according to Friis, they were specifically considering those industries that were ready for a disruptive technology. “We wondered what we could do now, what would be big. We wanted to do something that could reachmillions of people. During our discussions, we determined that telephony was extremely well suited for a peer-to-peer disruption. The keymetrics? It was centralized and expensive,” said Friis... BUSINESS MODEL Skype did not announce any plans for charging its services yet. But Zennstrom was confident that "there was multibillion dollars in potential for Skype." "We're not here to try to make some small business," he said. The creators insisted that since Skype did not have to invest in expensive infrastructure, its basic services would be kept free. “We have zero costs of getting new users and zero costs of running traffic.
